Germany legalizes recreational cannabis use!
The government of Germany government has approved an initiative to legalize recreational cannabis use.
The Bundesrat approved the Cannabis Act at its meeting on March 22, according to a press release issued on Friday. The new legislation will come into effect in April. The law will permit individuals to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis on their person and up to 50 grams of cannabis in their residence.
Additionally, individuals will have the right to cultivate up to three cannabis plants at their residence.
The Bundesrat press release also stated that the purchase and sale of cannabis remain prohibited. However, individuals who do not wish to grow plants themselves can join growers’ associations.
The Bundesrat emphasized that cannabis is still illegal for minors, and restrictions exist on consuming cannabis near children or schools.
Adults are also prohibited from consuming cannabis in the presence of children. There is a ban on consumption within sight of schools and daycare centers, as well as in pedestrian zones before 8 p.m.
The legalization effort will also include an amnesty and review of previous marijuana-related convictions. German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, a supporter of the legislation, warned in February that the legalization of cannabis does not imply that its consumption is safe.
Lauterbach stated, “Nobody should misunderstand this law: cannabis consumption is being legalized, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous.”
The sale of cannabis will be limited to so-called “cannabis social clubs” that will have a 500-member limit.
